Rap started
in the early '70's in New York with young D.J's making mix tapes, while MC's like Coke La Rockwere developing rhyme routines. A few years later inthe early 80's The Sugar Hill Gang released 'Rapper's Delight' which formed the scaffolding for rap in the future. Between '83 and'87 Run-DMC ushered in 'new school rap' proving that hip-hop music could make millions. This opened doors for LLCool J Salt N' Pepaand 'white rappers' the Beastie Boys to acheive new commercial heights. The hip-hop aesthetic then spread to other regions like California where Ice T reignedsupreme. From this came the 'Golden age of Rap' alongwith the next school of hip-hop artists: Slick Rick; Eric B and Rakim; EPMD and Public Enemy and theirground braking albums. Between '89 and '92, while Public Enemy's black nationalist approach begims tolose steam, NWA and ex-band member Ice Cube brought the West Coast's gangsta rap style to themain-stream, while groups from other regions like Houston's Geto Boys, Florida's 2 Live Crew and BayArea's Too Short prove that Hip-hop is a national phenomenon. In the East, a new group of bands , who were linked together under the name 'Native Tongues'(Jungle Brothers; DE La Soul and A tribe Called Quest)and EPMD's Hit Squad (Redman and Das EFX) also come forth. Both factions distanced themselves, however, from the success of Tone Loc, Young MC, MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice, whose brand of dance rap was selling likehotcakes. In the year of 1993 Dr. Dre's post-NWA opus,The Chronic, was (and still is!) an uncompromising gangstarap album that acheived pop success. It made a star ofSnoop Doggy Dogg and elevated California as the epicenter of the rap world. While the East Coast returned to the hard-core, relying on the crazy antics of those rowdybaldheads, Onyx. Then tHe Wu-Tang Clan's independant rise changed the face of the rap game, while other Big Apple rap bombers: Nas; Black Moon and
Biggie
Smalls (A.K.A The Notorious BIG) also prove that the East Coast Could sell records by 'keeping it real' . In the West It's all good as Coolio and Warren G doninate the charts. And in the posthumous of their mentor, Eazy E, Cleveland'sBone Thugs-N-Harmony become rap superstars. In thenext few years costal wars caused Sean 'Puffy' Combs
and Suge
Knight's respective labels: Bad Boy and Death Row to become caught up in a swirl of real-life drama. Tragically, this period ended with the deaths of camp's top artist : Tupac Shakur and Biggie. In the wake of Biggie's passing, 'Puffy' emerges as a rap artist himself. his musical aesthetic of making people dance is now normal as, now, artists are no longer afraid that making radio-friendly material will sacrifice their credibility.

Marion Suge Knight
The founder of Death Row Records, Marion "Suge" Knight was imprisoned
in October 1996 for violating his parole on a 1994 assault conviction. The FBI has for several years been investigating the
activities of Knight, Death Row and its business associates. Knight, who grew up in Compton, has long had ties to his home
turf gang, the Piru Bloods. Beginning in 1996, LAPD investigators became concerned that off-duty police officers were working
security for Death Row and associating with known gang members, concerns that were heightened by the investigation of Kevin
Gaines following his shooting death.
